Why can't you accept Marcelo?

Well, this is surprisingly to the point.

My reasons for not accepting him aren't the reasons that you think they are.

I can be quite direct, yes. Especially when it's necessary.

And what reasons would those be, Brooke?

I believe far more in good, old-fashioned passive-aggression. Theoretically, anyway. Saying things without really saying them.

Something about him rubs me the wrong way. I don't know what it is, but I don't like it. Like he's got some secrets up his sleeve. And what do we know about him, really? He's not from New York. And when I say New York, that's not a stand-in for the country. I wouldn't even easily trust someone from Georgia or Wyoming or Hawaii.

I spent the whole morning being terribly, terribly physically ill. I don't have time for games.

I'm not from New York, either. I was born and raised in Spain. I still speak English with a slight accent. A few weeks ago, some inebriated racist told me that I should go back to Mexico.

Marcelo has been nothing but honest and forthright with me. Not to mention that neither of us are exactly free of skeletons in our closets.

He is the love of my life. The only man I have ever loved. He is my husband and will be the father of my children.

That is not going to change.

You say that with such surety, but the truth is that you don't know. None of us know. Life's like that, Stephanie. There's always a secret that will pull the rug out from under your well-heeled feet, a curveball that'll shatter the picture perfect vision of life that you think you have.

I suppose I did and I've had a few things clarified by it.

You're entitled to your opinion. I can't make you like Marcelo or trust him. However, he is part of my life and that will not change.

And you do need to accept that.

I accept that you have the right to your own opinions and your own decisions. I don't necessarily have to agree with them. I can be polite and civil, and I can even go as far as being cordial. But any acceptance would be fake, and I don't particularly enjoy being fake with people I'm close to.
